Gift Ideas for Men – How to Create a Knitted Scarf for Men in Fishermen’s Rib

I’m super excited about this project, it’s just a knitted scarf however it has the potential to become a wardrobe staple.

It’s a block color, luxuriously soft, warm and with enough texture to ensure it has a masculine look.

I’m using wool because of its insulating qualities and prefer to use super fine merino for a few reasons.

It’s luxuriously soft, holds its shape wonderfully with every stitch clearly defined.

The best part – because its merino wool it’s not itchy.

For me it’s always about the yarn or fabric. The better the quality – the better the finished article.

There’s nothing better to knit for someone than a scarf – especially in the winter when it will be best received.

It’s a simple project that lends itself to absolute perfection.

Where to Start

Practical Information:

Here’s what you will need to create the scarf:

Wool: 350g (12.4oz) Super fine merino 8 ply, (US Light Worsted, UK DK)
Needles: Size 4mm knitting needles (US size 6, UK/CAN size 8)

Instructions to Knit a Scarf for Men (7” wide, 80″ long)

  1. Cast on 51 sts
  2. 1st Row:  Knit 3, Purl 1, to last 3 stitches, Knit 3
  3. 2nd Row: Knit 1, (Purl 1, Knit 3), to last 2 stitches, Purl 1, Knit 1.
  4. Continue with these two rows until the scarf is the desired length.

Join new balls of yarn mid row, not at the end of the row, as is generally the rule.

With a scarf its important the edging is clean, straight and uninterrupted.

If there are any faults within the yarn (often the case) leave these hanging at the back and sew in later; don’t attempt to knit through the faults as it will impair the overall look.

When the scarf is finished sew all the loose yarn into the work, see photo below. For more detail on sewing in the ends, casting on and off look under Knitting Know How.

Tips for Turning Your Scarf Into a Gift

If you’re making the scarf as a gift present it elegantly, why not think about making your own label and tying it to the articles with a chain of the yarn. Look under Crochet Know for how to make a simple chain.

You can even sew a simple gift bag, instructions for making a bag such as the one shown here are in Sewing Gifts.
